National Green Hydrogen Mission 2025-2030: Transforming India into Global Hub for Clean Energy Production

National Green Hydrogen Mission officially launched in 2023 with Rs 19,744 crore (approximately USD 2.4 billion) funding positions green hydrogen as core pillar of India's future energy landscape for achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and energy independence by 2047. Mission targets production of 5 million tonnes green hydrogen annually by 2030 through electrolysis using renewable electricity from solar and wind sources. Vision 2030 includes development of at least 5 GW electrolyzer manufacturing capacity and integration of approximately 125 GW associated renewable energy capacity specifically for green hydrogen production. Strategic Investment for Hydrogen Technologies (SIGHT) program provides financial incentives across value chain from production to end-use applications. Policy framework mobilizes cumulative investments exceeding Rs 8 lakh crore (over USD 90 billion) across entire value chain including electrolyzer manufacturing hydrogen production storage and distribution infrastructure. Green Hydrogen Hubs guidelines set target production capacity of 100,000 Metric Tonnes Per Annum per hub with resources mapped under PM Gati Shakti portal for integrated infrastructure planning. Implementation focuses on pilot projects in steel manufacturing mobility refining and fertilizer sectors demonstrating industrial applications. Scheme Implementing Agency under Department of Science and Technology oversees Hydrogen Valley Innovation Clusters while MNRE executes Green Hydrogen Hub development. Focus areas include development of export corridors positioning India as reliable global supplier reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports creating high-skill employment opportunities and establishing domestic electrolyzer manufacturing base. Green Hydrogen Purchase Obligations recommended for high-emitting industries including refineries fertilizers and steel to create assured demand and investment certainty for producers supporting market development and technology scaling.
